#ReadYourWorld: Snowflake Stories

Snowflake Stories allows families to personalize professionally written and illustrated stories so children can see themselves and the important people in their lives reflected in picture books. The press offers bilingual options for boys (baseball or soccer) and girls (dance or soccer). Children can be a co-creator in the storytelling venture by choosing and designing characters. My child chose to include his parents and grandparents, but friends, aunts, uncles, ext. can be plugged in instead. Book titles are also personalized, as seen in the image below.

The story is definetely engaging enough to warrant multiple readings and the personalization of image and text will make the book a family treasurer!

My family enjoys our copy, and my son was thrilled to share it with his grandparents. This will make a lovely gift for many children!

I would like to see the creators develop nonbinary characters as well as more options for pronouns. Additionally, I think there is a lot of potential for personalization that hasn’t been tapped into yet. For instance, I’d like the option for more body diversity. The only options are for able-bodied slim characters. This doesn’t quite represent our family. However, many skin tones are currently available and lesbian or gay parented households can see themselves represented.
